About Australia Day

Australia Day is about acknowledging and celebrating the contribution of all Australians. From our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people  - who have been here for more than 65,000 years - to those who have lived here for generations, to those who have come from all corners of the globe to call our country home. Marked on 26 January, Australia Day is an important date in Australia's history and has changed over time: starting as a celebration for emancipated convicts and evolving into what is now a celebration of Australia that reflects the nation's diverse people.

About Waitangi Day

Waitangi Day (Māori: Te Rā o Waitangi), the national day of New Zealand, marks the anniversary of the initial signing – on 6 February 1840 – of the Treaty of Waitangi, which is regarded as the founding document of the nation. The Treaty of Waitangi (Māori: Te Tiriti o Waitangi) was first signed on 6 February 1840 on the grounds of James Busby's house at Waitangi, in the Bay of Islands. The treaty was signed by representatives acting on behalf of the British Crown and, initially, about 45 Māori chiefs, and then grew to over 500 Maori chiefs and representatives of the British Crown.
